GREG SCARNICI's DUNGEONS AND DRAG QUEENS FIRE ISLAND THROUGH THE EYES OF ITS WORST DRAG QUEEN
In his second collection of humorous essays, comedian Greg Scarnici recounts some of his most shocking and scandalous experiences over twenty-five years of summering on New York’s Fire Island. From tea dances in Fire Island Pines to drag competitions in Cherry Grove, Greg Scarnici’s DUNGEONS AND DRAG QUEENS paints a picture of what a typical summer on the island of misfit boys is like.
“If I were to explain Fire Island to someone who’s never been there, I would describe it as a bathhouse on the beach,” Greg Scarnici explains. “Or Provincetown with more meth.”
Nothing is sugarcoated in DUNGEONS AND DRAG QUEENS. Scarnici spills all the hot tea from riding aboard a ferry in a dress with two hundred other drag queens during the annual Fourth of July Invasion, to getting innocently lured into a sex dungeon that was actually a 3x4 garden shed. He discusses his adventures in the notorious Meat Rack and dancing until the sun comes up at the island’s annual beach celebration, Pines Party.
"Greg Scarnici is not only on Fire Island, he's on fire! His breathless tales of drag queens subverting and carrying on in the Pines and the Grove are as revealing and informative as Speedos on a flaccid penis." -Michael Musto, NewNowNext
Every essay exposes a different, accurate and hilarious facet of Scarnici’s Fire Island. From “MuuMuu Land,” which talks about the magic that can happen by throwing on a five-dollar caftan, to “Suffolk Cunty Realness,” which details the creation of his alter ego, Levonia Jenkins. The bearded Levonia (pictured on the cover) has had the honor of being crowned “the worst drag queen in CherryGrove” four times, proving that one does not need a perfect beat or wig to be a crown-snatching female impersonator.
DUNGEONS AND DRAG QUEENS simultaneously weaves in some of the island’s extraordinary history and introduces many of its true- life colorful characters.

“Greg has given me the greatest gift - hearing his stories is like getting to eavesdrop and spy on my favorite misfit boys until I’m clutching my pearls and gasping.” - Cecily Strong, Saturday Night Live How did Levonia come about, and what has she done to win Worst Drag Queen, 4 years running? Levonia was created during a drunken, impromptu video shoot on the roof of my house in Cherry Grove in 2010 one Sunday afternoon. We were having brunch, and I put on a quick drag outfit which inspired my friend to shoot a ridiculous video parodying Paris is Burning with me as the subject. And as for being a bad drag queen, it's actually Levonia's "sisters" like Crystal Meth Gayle, She Mail and Alicia Skeeze who have won the title of worst drag queens by being in absolutely terrible taste. Has Fire Island tamed or fired up over the years, and how? Fire Island is a constant source of inspiration for me because it is filled with so many interesting people who never fail to give me a new perspective on life with their crazy antics. There is no taming that beast! Have you experienced the South Beach scene – nightlife, drag queens, etc? How does it compare, and is there a book in the making here for Greg? In my limited experience at clubs like Twist and the occasional drag brunch, I have found the queens in South Beach to be very polished and entertaining. I'm always wowed by their dance moves and flawless lip syncs - and if you ask them, I'm sure they'll tell you there are plenty of stories that can fill up a few books... Will we be seeing you in South Florida (or where) for book signings – or Levonia sightings? Nothing is set just yet, but Levonia and I are just a quick $32 ride on Spirit airlines away if we get that booking, honey!
“I’m still not sure if I should be flattered or sue over the story of mine Greg shares, but since the rest of his Fire Island tales are painted inequally hilarious and scandalous shades, I’m just gonna keepmy attorney on retainer in case this becomes a movie.” – Sherry Vine, Drag Diva
